A California man is lucky to be alive after he survived a six-story plunge in his car after he drove it off the top of a parking garage.

According to a statement from the Santa Monica Police Department, officers responded to a call of a vehicle that had gone over the side of the six-story parking garage at around 12:10 a.m. early Sunday morning. There, officers discovered a 20-year-old male from Twentynine Palms, and despite his injuries, was able to speak with the responding officers but, why, or how, he drove off the top of the building remained unclear.

"Due to the fact the driver was transported to the hospital and receiving medical treatment, they were unable to determine if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the incident," said the Santa Monica Police Department in a statement on Facebook.

The driver allegedly suffered critical non-visible injuries in the estimated 60-foot fall.

During the investigation, the driver began experiencing "non-visible health issues," and he was taken to a local hospital.

"As a part this ongoing investigation, the Santa Monica Police Department learned that the driver experienced non-visible health issues while under the care of the Santa Monica Fire Department," the department added. "The SMFD transported the driver to the UCLA Westwood hospital in critical condition. The driver is recovering in stable condition at the hospital."

The Santa Monica Police Department says they are continuing to investigate the crash and have obtained a search warrant for the driver's blood to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.

Two other individuals were with the driver prior to his driving off the six-story garage, but, it did not appear that they were in the vehicle when it was traveling towards the side of the parking garage.
