Rockies Rally Falls Short In 9-7 Loss To Cubs

Originally called safe on trying to score on a wild pitch in the ninth inning, Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado was ruled out after video review and the Rockies fell to the Chicago Cubs 9-7 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Coors Field.

Arenado was trying to score after the Rockies had loaded the bases. With two outs and Ian Desmond at the plate, Cubs pitcher Brandon Morrow bounced a pitch to the backstop. Catch Wilson Contreras threw to Morrow, who applied the tag on Arenado.

Rockies starter German Marquez struggled through his three-and-a-third innings, allowing six runs on eight hits.

The Rockies offense did its best to bail him out. Down 6-0, the Rockies responded with four runs to pull within 6-4 on Charlie Blackmon and Arenado back-to-back home runs in the fifth.

The Rockies answered the Cubs' three runs in the top of the seventh with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

The Cubs take two of three in the series. The Rockies start a three-game series with the San Diego Padres on Monday at Coors Field.

Coverage starts Monday at 6 p.m. MDT on KOA NewsRadio 850 AM and 94.1 FM.
