MONFORT: Optimistic About Long-Term Deal With Nolan Arenado

Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado celebrates after the Rockies defeated the Cubs to win the 2018 N.L. Wild Card game at WRigley Field in Chicago.

Perhaps the biggest question facing the Colorado Rockies in 2019 has nothing to do with this season.

What is the long-term future of star third baseman Nolan Arenado?

Last week, Arenado and the Rockies avoided arbitration and agreed on a one-year, $26 million contract for this season, the largest-ever contract for an arbitration-eligible player.

Now, the focus turns to the future and the prospects the Rockies and Arenado can come to an agreement on a deal that will keep Arenado in purple pinstripes for, potentially, years to come.

Saturday, Rockies owner Dick Monfort told KOA NewsRadio's Mike Rice he is "optimistic" Arenado will want to sign a long-term deal and the two sides can come to an agreement.

"We told Nolan this is his call," Monfort said. "It's his decision. But I'm optimistic. I really sense that Nolan wants to be a Rockie but there are a lot of things that enter into it."
